In this tattoo you will learn about soft shading
Here is gow to do it.
1. Right Needle Choice (Super Important)
For soft shading, don’t use liners.
Best options:
• Magnum (M1 / RM) → smooth blends
• Curved Magnum (RM) → best for portraits & faces
• Round Shader (RS) → small areas, details
👉 Beginners: 7RM or 9RM is a sweet spot.
⸻
2. Ink Dilution (Grey Wash Magic)
Hard black = harsh shade ❌
Soft shading = grey wash ✅
Basic setup:
• Cup 1: Black (full strength)
• Cup 2: Dark grey (70%)
• Cup 3: Medium grey (40–50%)
• Cup 4: Light grey (20–30%)
💡 Always build shade layer by layer, never in one pass.
⸻
3. Machine Settings
• Voltage: Slightly lower than lining
👉 around 6–7V (rotary) / 7–8V (coil)
• Hit: Medium to soft (not punchy)
If machine is too fast → patchy shading
Too slow → trauma
⸻
4. Hand Movement (This Is the Secret 🔥)
Use motion, not pressure.
Best techniques:
✔ Whip Shading
• Enter skin → flick out fast
• Creates natural fade
• Perfect for realism & portraits
✔ Pendulum / Brush Motion
• Small swinging motion
• Great for smooth transitions
❌ Avoid:
• Staying in one spot
• Heavy hand pressure
• Going too deep
⸻
5. Depth Control
• Only tip of the needle in the skin
• If skin turns shiny or bleeds too much → you’re too deep
Soft shading should look lighter when fresh — it settles darker after healing.
⸻
6. Layering Rule
Think like drawing:
• Light → Medium → Dark
• Wipe, check, then add more
• Let skin breathe between passes
Never chase darkness in one go.
