The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2025 honors the discovery and development of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) — crystalline materials with enormous internal surface area and tunable pores. MOFs are built from metal nodes linked by organic ligands, creating internal cavities that can selectively trap gases and condense water. Researchers have demonstrated MOFs that harvest potable water from arid air, capture carbon dioxide from emissions or ambient air, and bind persistent pollutants for removal. The prize recognizes a generational toolbox for designing stable, functional frameworks that can be tailored to environmental and energy challenges. While scale-up and lifecycle questions remain, MOFs represent a promising materials strategy to address water scarcity and climate mitigation. This Short gives the idea in 60 seconds and links to the Nobel press release and key papers.
