The first railway in Norfolk was the Yarmouth and Norwich Railway. As the name suggests, it connected Great Yarmouth to Norwich, via Reedham.
It began construction in 1843 and was finished in 1844.
Three years later it was connected to the newly constructed Reedham to Lowestoft junction, opened by the Lowestoft Harbour Railway Company and at the same time a curve was added connecting it to the Yarmouth line, giving a direction route from Yarmouth to Lowestoft.
In 1859 a line was opened from Yarmouth to Haddiscoe and a junction added a few years later connecting it to the Lowestoft line at Herringfleet giving a now shorter route, making the Reedham curve obsolete and by the 1880's it's tracks were removed.
The following few decades saw a boom in railway construction around Norfolk with numerous routes opening, including the direct coastal route from Yarmouth to Lowestoft via Gorleston in 1903. During the 1950s and through to the 1970s many of these routes have since closed leaving again no direct route connecting the towns of Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft, and with most of these previous routes now developed upon it's very unlikely they will ever be able to be connected again.
That is, except for the little abandoned Reedham curve which now sits empty having been turned into a nature footpath, but it certainly wouldn't take too much effort or expense to relay the tracks once again connecting the two towns together for the first time in over 50 years.
