⚖️ Veterans with disabilities deserve fair treatment in the workplace — and federal law protects them.
📍 A St. Petersburg, Fla. senior living facility, The Princess Martha, violated the ADA when it refused to accommodate a veteran applicant with PTSD and revoked her job offer. The U.S. EEOC won a $405,083 jury verdict in her favor.
Here’s what happened:
🔹 The applicant disclosed her PTSD and legally prescribed medications that could affect a drug test.
🔹 She took the drug test and repeatedly tried to provide proof of her medications.
🔹 The Princess Martha made no effort to accommodate her and revoked the job offer. Management even admitted to submitting false information to the EEOC.
⚖️ The jury awarded:
✅ $5,083 in back pay
✅ $50,000 in compensatory damages
✅ $350,000 in punitive damages
@TaylorMadeHR takeaway: Employers must provide reasonable accommodations during hiring and employment for all disabilities, including mental health conditions like PTSD. Ignoring these obligations can lead to substantial legal and reputational consequences.
➡️ Train your managers and HR teams on ADA compliance, handle accommodation requests seriously, and ensure applicants are treated fairly — especially veterans who have served our country.
