July 3, 2015:
Upon our arrival to Compton, local V86 was about 5 minutes away. Recent road work and tree cutting restored the view of this iconic N&W trestle, one of many located along the H-Line.

A few miles south at Vaughn, 202, 38Q and 926 were all part of a morning NB rush. With a goal of trying to frame as many endangered Color Position Light (CPL) signals as possible, we started off there. 202 and 38Q climb the grade toward Vaughn Summit, about a mile north of our location.

What appears to be ballast empties, 926 heads north over the Compton trestle with the best set of power for the morning, including some friendly horn blasts from the engineer. This would be a popular spot for our trips due to the ease of access on US-340 just off of I-66.

July 4, 2015
The following afternoon after chasing 611, we caught a couple of trains on the Christiansburg District. At Arthur, just west of Salem, 23G drops eastbound down the grade toward Roanoke past the endangered CPL's with newer aluminum gantries towering overhead. 23G is often set up for DPU operation.

Later that evening, coal empties pass through the Cambria district of Christiansburg with the Christiansburg and Pelton CPL's still standing, but not for long. The engineer proudly flies an American flag from the cab on this July 4th. This location is a quiet zone.

July 5, 2015
The next morning while setting up our wait for 611, 22A climbs the grade toward the Blue Ridge Summit. The Villamont and Blue Ridge CPL's were perhaps the most iconic signal masts in the Roanoke area.

In Roanoke, while waiting for 611 to take off to the Christiansburg District, several trains passed through downtown, including some interesting power on both 189 and 236.

On our way home from Roanoke, we were fortunate to trace down some trains on the ever sporadic single H-Line main. The Arcadia signals at the bottom of Solitude siding is perhaps the most iconic and scenic location on the Roanoke District, so seeing a train here was a must. Luckily, two northbounds departed Roanoke right after we left the city.

At Lyndwood, 37Q makes a hustle southbound with an array of locomotives likely to be set-off at Roanoke.

Later that evening we caught up to 747 at the Compton Trestle in last light. Chasing trains on the H-Line is no hard task, as the speed limits fluctuate with the amount of curves and grades.
