This week I tried a new resist dyeing technique using beeswax. I boiled up the avocado dye the night before and let it cool down ready for the following day. The dye needs to be cool so the wax stays in tact and does not melt off. This also means because there is no heat to accelerate the dye process it is best to leave the cloth in the dye pot for a few days, stirring the dye at least each morning and night. I melted the beeswax and painted it over the linen. It is normal for the wax to crack, creating a subtle print design of its own. To remove the beeswax I ran the cloth under warm water to soften the wax, making it easy to peel off. Any small, hard to remove spots of wax I boiled off in hot water. I used a heavyweight linen for these tea towels and was really happy with how they turned out They would also make lovely gifts. Hope this video might inspire you to get creative this week.
