If you visit Philadelphia nowadays, right in front of the City’s Independence Hall in Independence Square is a prominent statue of the Irishman John Barry. So how did the statue of a man born and reared in County Wexford end up in this quintessentially American location? The answer, Barry’s seafaring exploits during the American War of Independence from 1775 to 1783 helped his adopted country defeat Great Britain and gain its freedom. For example, during the revolutionary war he was the first Continental Navy captain to capture a British warship. After that achievement, he captured no less than twenty more enemy ships, won the last sea battle of the revolution in 1783, and even fought with George Washington at the battle of Princeton. Barry’s success during the war was rewarded later by Washington, when he was made the first head of the U.S. Navy, and commanded the frigate United States. He duly made that frigate the first de facto U.S. naval academy, and his teaching and mentoring of many recruits ensured there was a future generation of U.S. naval officers to protect the United States, especially during the War of 1812.

This 45-minute radio documentary investigates the inspirational story of Irishman John Barry, and how he advanced from impoverished Irish roots to eventually become “The Father of The American Navy”.

The two songs on Commodore John Barry in this documentary, the first called “Sailor Boy” and the second called “When Each Dawn Seems So New”, were composed by songwriter Cliff Wedgebury from Cork City, and are performed in the documentary by balladeer Roger McGuire from Wexford Town.
