𝄞 When making music in a single key there are still ways that combining notes can result in a very dissonant unpleasing sound. When making Lofi Hiphop beats it is common to reach for extended chords such as Seventh, Ninth and Eleventh Chords. When using more notes in a chord there is a greater risk that the melody notes will clash. In order to highlight the most bothersome of these clashing notes, the minor 9 interval or 13 semitones, we'll look at how to classify the distance between two notes; Intervals. By using a simple chord progression and pairing it with a nice LoFi piano melody, we can use ideas inspired by the music of Bill Evans, Bach, and musics in between to examine three different ways to take dissonant intervals and make them smoother. The First Solution will be to simply avoid the undesirable interval by changing the melody note. The Second Solution involves incorporating the 13 semitone interval into a melody, so that it's dissonance is less prominent. The third solution will retain the melodic note while changing the chord underneath. Along the way we will discuss inversions, passing tones, reharmonization, sequences, line drawing, call and response, side-step progressions, log cabins in Alaska and pyramids. 𝄢
