In 2022, 101-year-old Josef Schütz became one of the last former Nazi camp guards to be convicted for crimes linked to World War II. A German court found him guilty of assisting in the murder of more than 3,500 prisoners while serving at the Sachsenhausen concentration camp during the Second World War.
He was sentenced to five years in prison, marking one of the final efforts to deliver justice for the victims of Nazi atrocities. However, Schütz died before he could begin serving his sentence.
His conviction represented the closing chapter of a decades-long pursuit to hold surviving participants in Nazi crimes accountable, even more than 75 years after the war ended.
