Описание: Today I'm discussing video game or digital content pre orders, more broadly at first and then I'll bring in a case study - Humankind game, which recently announced it would be available for free as part of the Xbox Game Pass! So should we preorder video games? Do pre orders help the developer? Are pre orders anti-consumer? Is pre-ordering any game a good idea?

The Pros of Pre Ordering
Here I cover three broad categories - access, rewards, and price. Access is improved through closed betas, early access alphas, early launch access, or other advanced access techniques. Rewards include things like posters, in game content bonuses, or similar. Price pros include things like discounts.

The Cons - Against Pre Ordering
This section speaks volumes in the comment sections on many of my videos. You're buying something that doesn't yet exist - fully, in part, or in some way. These games are untested - particularly in the realm of multiplayer testing, and performance in the real world, with real people's hardware and constraints. Trickery with trailers and advertising material seemingly benefits from this too, as can trailers and other marketing materials. There is also seemingly less of a real need to preorder, particularly for digital items where issues of old like supply lines, manufacturing constraints, stock levels in store, and item logistics and sizes don't push us to "order to secure our copy!".

Humankind Game | An interesting pre-order case study
So then, Humankind initially targeted an April 2021 release, which was delayed to August 2021. And now, just a few days from Humankind release date we hear it's coming to Xbox Game Pass for PC on release day, in full and for free. I wonder if that happened this late due to contractual agreements... or if we have marketing ploys and perhaps a little bit of clever sales tactics at play here, ensuring people like me preorder, and then capturing the rest of the market with access to Humankind on release day for free, for $1 for the first month, or at worst $10 per month.
