A deadly Optus outage has coincided with plummeting consumer confidence in Australian telecommunications companies, prompting experts to call for urgent action to rebuild trust. Only 15% of Australians now use landlines to make calls, down 3% in a year, with even the over-75s age group declining from 58% in 2023 to 45% currently. Consumer trust surveys reveal 40% don't believe their provider acts in their best interest, while nearly half doubt telcos will keep costs low.
