Installments Are Payment in Advance

Canada Revenue Agency’s (CRA) policy around tax installments has confused taxpayers for years. When CRA asks you to make installments that is for taxation years where the tax return is not yet due. The next personal tax installment is due on December 15, 2022, and that payment is for the 2022 taxation year, the return being due on April 30, 2023.
If you owe them money right now for the 2021 taxation year (the return you filed in April 2022) then if you are making payments on that – those are arrears payments. And you are only allowed to make a number of payments (rather than paying them all at once) if you have talked to CRA and have a payment plan in place. When CRA talks about installments they are asking for money in advance, they are not giving you an opportunity to pay them money you already owe, over a longer period of time.
