This colourful and lively 'Intrada' is actually placed as the final piece in this collection of Francis Jackson's op 84. With more than a hint of Holst's 'The Planets' in the music, this Toccata-like work derives from Jackson's monodrama, 'Daniel in Babylon' (1962), and was extended for use in the Epiphany Procession at York.
Prefaced by a fanfare on the Great trumpets, the piece combines semiquaver movement and syncopated chords in both hands, along with a busy pedal part throughout. The rhythmic energy and vitality in the music is also sustained through changes in time signature. Although without key signature, the nominal tonality is B flat and this is heard definitively at the beginning and end of the work.
Sample set: Hereford Cathedral from Lavender Audio (via Hauptwerk)
