Drilling Bell Bottom Piers
Since we have shifty soil down here, I had removed a lot of topsoil and backfilled with 8' of more solid clay. Even still, per the boring report, we decided to set piers at 14' deep (6 feet into undisturbed clay). At this depth, the bearing stress is very good, so we were able to use less piers and with less risk of movement, than if we had drilled shallower.
The 12" diameter shaft is drilled first, then the belling tool is picked up. It has blades that shove out to either side when the tool sets down on bottom. These are tapered to ream the base of the hole out to 36" with a 45 degree slope. Some call this a big-foot pier. The blades also work to pull the clay to the middle of the tool so it can be hauled out.
With the piers drilled, now we're ready to fill them up with concrete!
