India’s Chief of Defence Staff has unveiled two landmark doctrines that mark a bold shift in the nation’s warfighting approach — combining transparency with strategic signalling to allies and adversaries alike.

The Cyberspace Doctrine recognises the virtual realm as a fifth battlefield, alongside land, sea, air, and space. It calls for offensive cyber capabilities, real-time intrusion detection, and cross-agency coordination to protect critical infrastructure — from banking networks and power grids to satellite links and military command systems. The Amphibious Operations Doctrine details how India’s Army, Navy, and Air Force will conduct joint landings on hostile shores, secure island territories, and sustain operations deep in the Indo-Pacific. The Andaman & Nicobar Islands emerge as a strategic hub for both deterrence and humanitarian relief.

Together, these doctrines push India towards multi-domain readiness, where cyberattacks, amphibious forces, and space-based assets work in synchrony to counter emerging threats.

Meanwhile, at a recent address at IIT Madras, Army Chief stressed that strategic communication is now as vital as military firepower. In an age of instant news and social media, controlling the narrative can influence public opinion, diplomatic stances, and even the outcome of conflicts — long before the first shot is fired. He called for integrating strategic communication into operational planning to ensure credible information reaches the public and adversary propaganda is countered effectively.
