Pipe Fitter Training Notes | What is Beveling?
Are you learning pipe fitting or welding basics? 🏗️🔩
This training note explains what beveling is, why it is important, and where it is used in pipe fitting and welding work.
🔹 What Is Beveling?
Beveling is the process of cutting or shaping the edge of a pipe or metal plate at an angle instead of a square edge.
This angled edge is called a bevel.
🎯 Purpose of Beveling:
To allow proper weld penetration
To create strong and defect-free joints
To reduce welding stress and cracks
To prepare pipes for butt welding
🔩 Common Bevel Angles:
30° to 37.5° (most common in pipe welding)
Depends on welding procedure and pipe thickness
🛠️ Types of Bevels:
Single V-Bevel
Double V-Bevel
J-Bevel
U-Bevel
⚙️ Tools Used for Beveling:
Grinding machine
Beveling machine
Lathe machine
Cutting torch
👷 Where Beveling Is Used:
Pipe fitting work
Welding fabrication
Oil & gas pipelines
Power plants
Structural steel work
🎓 Why Beveling Is Important for Pipe Fitters:
Ensures strong weld joints
Improves welding quality
Required by welding codes & standards (ASME, AWS)
