Christmas Eve 2019 marked the 75th anniversary of the dramatic incident which saw Sub-Lieutenant Lock taking off from Long Kesh airfield before his engine went on fire. Realising that he wouldn’t make it as far as Lough Neagh and that landing a plane full of fuel into a field would be a fatal move, Peter then spotted Portmore Lough.
He ditched the plane and was rescued by the Kane family who rowed a boat out after then 12-year-old Seamus Kane - who still lives in a house on the shore of the lough - saw the plane going down and raised the alarm.
Along with his colleagues at the Ulster Aviation Society (UAS), Ray has been painstakingly restoring the plane for 35 years, ever since it was lifted out of Portmore Lough by the UAS with the help of an RAF Lynx Helicopter.
You can visit the RSPB nature reserve at Portmore Lough and learn more about the Christmas Eve crash and recovery and get close to nature and view the many birds that visit RSPB Portmore Lough through the seasons from the viewing platform and bird hide at the end of the boardwalk.
