Описание: James Buchanan (1791–1868): The President Who Let America Burn
He was the most experienced man ever to reach the American presidency — fifty years in public life, every major diplomatic and legislative post available, the accumulated wisdom of half a century in the corridors of power. And when the United States needed him most — when the Union was fracturing, when states were seceding, when the greatest constitutional crisis in American history demanded decisive presidential leadership — James Buchanan reached for a legal brief and told the country his hands were tied.
This documentary covers the complete biography of James Buchanan (1791–1868): from his birth in a log cabin in the Allegheny Mountains of Pennsylvania, through his brilliant legal career in Lancaster, the tragic death of his fiancée Ann Coleman that made him America’s only bachelor president, his long political apprenticeship in the Pennsylvania legislature, the U.S. House, the U.S. Senate, his diplomatic postings to Russia and Britain, his decades-long rivalry with Stephen Douglas, his role in the catastrophic Ostend Manifesto, and his finally achieved presidential nomination in 1856 at the age of sixty-five.
Then: the presidency. The secret backstage manipulation of the Dred Scott decision. The endorsement of the fraudulent Lecompton Constitution that split the Democratic Party in half. The Panic of 1857. John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry. The 1860 election that handed Abraham Lincoln the presidency and gave the South its excuse to secede. And then the final, catastrophic four months — when seven states left the Union, when Buchanan told the country that secession was illegal AND that he couldn’t stop it, when the Star of the West was turned back from Fort Sumter by Confederate guns, when the president of the United States spent his last weeks in office writing compromise proposals while the country he had served for fifty years fell apart around him.
He left office on March 4, 1861, told Lincoln he was a happy man, went home to Wheatland, and spent the rest of his life writing a book explaining that everything that happened was someone else’s fault.
Historians rank him last. Or nearly last. Always at the bottom. The man who had everything — experience, knowledge, preparation, constitutional expertise — and used none of it when it mattered most.
This is his full story.

📌 Comment: Is Buchanan the worst president ever — or was the Civil War inevitable regardless of who held the office?
