Few but Korean War-era veterans are likely to recall Itami Air Base, near Kobe and Osaka. That's because it closed sooner than most in Japan, in 1959. Its primary mission was the 67th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing. After the Americans departed, the airfield was enlarged and renamed Osaka-Itami International Airport. The base was featured in two Hollywood films "Sayonara" (1957) starring Marlon Brando and "The Hunters" (1958) starring Robert Mitchum.
