How Much and When

A certain amount of caution should be used when trying anything new as you could experience adverse effects when you consume it. Always remember to read the instructions and always drink any herbal tea in the recommended doses. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have a pre-existing medical condition always consult your herbalist or your doctor before starting any new treatment as there could be additional side effects.

Passionflower Tea (Passiflora incarnate)

Passionflower tea is a very gentle sedative that is also known to relax anxiety and stress. So it is great if you are having trouble sleeping due to daily stress. You can now easily purchase Passionflower tea over the internet or in health food shops. Not everyone likes the taste of Passionflower tea but some people find adding a little honey or concentrated fruit juice to it improves the taste greatly.

Camomile Tea (Matricaria recutita or German chamomile)

Camomile tea is the age old favorite night time drink and is readily available in most supermarkets in the tea section. It is a mild sedative with a pleasant taste that aids in promoting sleep. You can also use the teabag in your bathwater to promote sleep. Just hang the teabag over the running tap and enjoy the soothing fragrance in your bath.

Valerian Tea (Valeriana officinalis)

Valerian Tea has recently become a more popular cure for insomnia with many studies showing very promising results. However how Valerian works is not properly understood yet, and Valerian has shown to have more of a balancing effect on some people. This means that some people find that Valerian helps them sleep better and some people find that it can make them more awake. So when taking Valerian test it, and see what effect it has on you as an individual. Valerian is now readily available as a tea over the internet and in most health shops; it can also be available in tablet form as some people find the tea to have an unpleasant taste. A word of caution needs to be said about taking Valerian as some people have reported that it causes agitation, headaches and night terrors.

The above teas have been shown to assist people in getting a better night's sleep. However, if you are having trouble sleeping then the best thing to do is to find out what is causing you to have sleeping issues, and deal with the issues directly.
