What compaction does is prevent oxygen, nutrient, and water from being able to penetrate properly to the roots of your lawn, which in turn leads to poor lawn health.

Compaction can be caused by many factors including regular foot traffic, driving on your lawn, sport activities and general use of your lawn.

The Reel Solutions 3 Tine Aerator is ideal for aerating small areas of your lawn where compaction like this may have occurred or for aiding water penetration where soil has become repellent or hydrophobic.

The corer features:
• Three 12.7mm hollow tines with window ejection
• A formed steel flat bar base with tubular steel T handle
• Zinc plating for corrosion resistance
• Stainless-steel grub screws to hold the tines in place.
• And some high-quality foam grips

How to use:
Simply drive the aerator into the soil with either just your hands or with your foot depending on the force required and then pull the aerator back out of the soil.

The soil cores will then be ejected from the side of the tines. Make sure you don’t push the tines in too far as this can clog the tine and prevent ejection.

Continue this process across the lawn area spacing holes approximately 100mm apart.

Removing these plugs from within the soil helps create more space for your lawn to breath, absorb nutrients and increase soil permeability.

One thing to be mindful of when the soil is dry it can crumble inside the tines, preventing proper removal of the cores from the ground. On the flip side, if the soil is too wet it can lodge itself inside the tines.

So, the best time to use is when the soil is hydrated but not overly saturated with water.

After core aeration, you will be left with lots of holes through the lawn where the plugs were removed, and the cores will be left behind on the surface of your lawn. These cores will breakdown over a couple of weeks and can be helped along with irrigation.

You can rake across them with the back of the rake, breaking them apart and allowing the dirt to fall back into the holes. Mowing over the plugs will also help break them apart and spread the dirt back into the profile.

After coring your lawn is a great time to top dress with washed river sand. The sand will fill the holes and enable air and water to penetrate due to its free draining, open structure. But be sure to only do this during the active growing months of your lawn.
