Requiring a lot of water for fruit production, cucumbers must have moist soil throughout their initial growth and subsequent fruiting stages. Specific mulches applied during the spring and summer help maintain the correct soil moisture levels and protect fruits from touching the bare ground.

Advantages:
1. Shedding excess water from beds reduces drowning.
2. Reduced leaching of nutrients from the root zone.
3. Weed control with opaque and wavelength-selective mulches.

Here in this short video the farmer was sowing cucumber seeds after proper mulching in his field. Mulching is covering soil surface by any materials. Mulching is done by various methods. MULCHING is covering soil surface by anything which may be paddy straw, plastic sheet, dry leaves, etc. Besides, soil mulching is also done. Soil mulching is loosening of soil which breaks capillary pores and it restricts evaporation. Thus soil mulching conserve soil moisture.
