Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in the 129th episode of Mann Ki Baat (28 December 2025), expressed serious concern over Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and termed it a major global health crisis.
🔹 Citing ICMR data, the Prime Minister highlighted that antibiotics are becoming less effective in treating common diseases such as pneumonia and urinary tract infections (UTIs).
🔹 He identified the indiscriminate use of antibiotics without medical prescription (over-the-counter use) as the biggest reason behind the growing AMR threat.
🔍 What is AMR?
Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites evolve over time, making antibiotics and other antimicrobial medicines ineffective.
📌 According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 1.2 million people die globally every year due to antimicrobial resistance.
