Richelieu tries to stop Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds from reaching Spain, but they successfully avoid all his traps. Before reaching the frontier, some gypsies, who tells them that they have been forced to deliver the horses to the mayor of the nearby town, who wants ten horses as a gift for Rochefort. Athos disguises himself as Rochefort, and is so successful that he not only gets their horses back but has the real Rochefort held prisoner when he arrives.
