Edward Winslow, one of the Pilgrims who attended the original Thanksgiving celebration with 90 Wampanoag Indians, wrote:

"... for three days we entertained and feasted...

"And although it be not always so plentiful, as it was at this time with us, yet by the goodness of God, we are so far from want, that we often wish you partakers of our plenty."

In 1789, the year George Washington became president and very many significant challenges faced the United States, Washington issued a proclamation to recommend to the people of the United States "a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God."

Abraham Lincoln made Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1863 even though America was in the midst of a bloody civil war. Lincoln wrote: "to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a Day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens."

Lincoln recognized the need to create a unified national holiday to acknowledge blessings with gratitude, but also to pray for the nation's healing during this time of great strife.

Every president since has offered up Thanksgiving proclamations.

The intentional act of giving thanks is such a powerful behavior. To intentionally look around and express gratitude for the things we have access to. It can be for some material blessing, or it can be for family, freedom or the beauty in nature. The list truly goes on and on if we look for it.

And here lies an added benefit of being thankful: Thankfulness naturally leads to an increase in joy, and joy leads to optimism, and optimism leads to hope, and being hopeful is so important today. So make it a daily habit to look around, see something to be grateful for, and give thanks. I want to tell you how thankful all of us here at FOX 11 are that you welcome us into your home and from all of us here, we wish you a joyous Thanksgiving and upcoming holiday season.
