Our first Core Investment Principle could be the most important. Asset Allocation explains performance and volatility. This is the concept that your rate of return but also the volatility (ups and downs) in your portfolio are directly correlated to how much your portfolio is weighted in equities (or stocks) vs. fixed income (or bonds).
