How can art help us think critically about technology, AI, and our own perception of images? Tiffany Calvert, associate professor and chair of the MFA in Visual Art program combines cutting-edge AI, abstraction, and traditional oil painting in her work to critique and magnify the very human biases in datasets. This collaboration with the McKelvey School of Engineering has provided valuable expert feedback as WashU researchers build and train AI models — the tools of which may someday transfer to medical imaging.

The Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis is a leader in architecture, art, and design education.
