Описание: GATES OF LIGHT is a permanent landscape artwork by Studio Roosegaarde, created by Daan Roosegaarde. The project transforms sixty historic floodgates into a luminous gateway using only the headlights of passing cars, creating a futuristic light landscape without electricity.

Located at the entrance of the Afsluitdijk, GATES OF LIGHT illuminates monumental floodgates built in 1932 through retroreflection. As vehicles pass, their headlights activate a reflective layer embedded in the architecture, causing the structures to glow in the dark. When no cars are present, the floodgates remain unlit. More than 20,000 vehicles pass through the site daily, turning movement and mobility into the source of light itself.

The floodgates were originally designed by Dutch architect Dirk Roosenburg, the grandfather of Rem Koolhaas. As part of the project, the buildings were fully restored and augmented with a retro-reflective coating composed of microscopic prisms. This technique reflects light efficiently without consuming energy and avoids contributing to light pollution.

GATES OF LIGHT is part of ICOON Afsluitdijk, commissioned by the Dutch government to strengthen the innovative character of the 32-kilometre Afsluitdijk. The programme highlights the dike’s core functions of water protection, heritage, energy, and mobility, positioning it as a model landscape for today and tomorrow.

GATES OF LIGHT forms part of a broader transformation of the Afsluitdijk, alongside projects such as WINDVOGEL and GLOWING NATURE, demonstrating how infrastructure can be reimagined through design, sustainability, and cultural meaning.
