Morocco fans celebrate team victory over Portugal in Madrid

Описание: Hundreds of Morocco fans celebrated on the streets of central Madrid Saturday after the north African squad qualified for the semi-finals of the soccer World Cup.

Fans young and old cheered on Puerta de Sol square in the Spanish capital, following Morocco's victory over Portugal 1-0.

Over 800,000 Moroccans reside in Spain, making them the largest foreign community in the European Union member.

Spain and Morocco, only separated by 14 kilometres (8 miles) at the narrowest point of the Strait of Gibraltar, have a long and complicated history.

Morocco's victory means that Africa finally has a team in the World Cup semifinals, and so does the Arab world.

Morocco delivered a seminal moment in the nearly 100-year history of soccer’s biggest tournament, beating Cristiano Ronaldo and his Portugal team 1-0 Saturday in another shocking result in the first World Cup staged in the Middle East.

Youssef En-Nesyri scored the winning goal in the 42nd minute to continue an improbable run that has generated an outpouring of pride in the Arab world, inspiring displays in Arab identity from fans in different countries.

"It is an achievement, I believe, for all Arab countries besides Morocco. If we make it to the final it will be great but if we don’t we are fine," Morocco supporter Mohcin Mamar said while celebrating on the streets of Madrid.

Africa is also rejoicing at finally having a nation advancing to the levels typically only reached by European or South American teams. Cameroon (1990), Senegal (2002) and Ghana (2010) all reached the quarterfinals but got no further.
