A Visit to Italy's Marche Region

Justin visits Italy's Marche region to reveal that the little-known area is the center for home-grown, exceptionally quality products.

A recent food scouting trip to Italy brought me to the little-known Marche region, where I'd heard there were undiscovered culinary gems waiting to be uncovered and brought back to the States.

I asked the people from the Marche region what their food was all about, and over and over they gave me this same answer:
"What does the cuisine of Marche [mean] to me? The best in the world!"

In addition to that, the people of the Marche region told me that, while they don't produce as much volume of food as some of the better known regions of Italy, what they do produce is exceptionally high quality. As a result, they have a knack for producing ingredients that speak for themselves, the types of ingredients that chefs can prepare simply to really showcase the individual qualities of the ingredients.

Justin: "Tell me about Marche cuisine."

"It's fantastic. You should come with me to my grandmother's so you can enjoy with me!"

Oh, yeah, and a lot of people in the Marche region tell me that their grandmothers cook really well - it's apparently a good place to have a grandma.

And I didn't just take their word for it; I asked some other food professionals what they think of their Marche products and here's what they had to say:

"The food of Le Marche should be much more appreciated that it is. The porchetta, the lasagna, the fried olives are all great dishes that everyone should try at least once."

"I think Le Marche region is up to par with any other thing that you could find in Italy - four star, five star cuisine, exceptional having the Adriatic right here, they have some of the freshest seafood around; phenomenal veal, phenomenal lamb; I think that you would find the world-class cuisine here that you would find anywhere."

And here's what I think:

Justin: "One thing that seems to me really distinctive about this region is you have a lot of producers that grow the ingredients that go into the products - so, we met an olive oil producer that grows her own olives, a jam maker who grows or forages in the wild all of his fruits, and a pasta maker, even, that grows his own wheat.

There's a tremendous number of advantages, it seems, to doing this. For one thing, they have control, right? The olive oil maker can kind of think; it's like making wine - you can think ahead to what the end product is going to be, pick the product at the right time, decrease the amount of time and distance that it goes from the fields into the manufacturing facility, and just in general it seems like a tremendous boost to quality. That's kind of one of the cool things that we're finding in the Marche region."

So there you have it. You might not have heard of the Marche region yet, but you're going to soon be hearing a lot more about them, because their products are awesome!
