This explanation clarifies a crucial distinction often misunderstood in Muslim societies. A sect (firqa) emerges when followers declare exclusive religious truth, label others as misguided or outside salvation, and turn interpretive differences into boundaries of faith. In contrast, a school of thought (maktab-e-fikr) represents a methodological or intellectual approach to understanding Islam—such as jurisprudence, theology, or interpretation—while fully accepting the legitimacy of disagreement within the Ummah.
Ghamidi emphasizes that Islam recognizes ikhtilaf (legitimate disagreement) but strongly condemns firqa bandi (sectarianism) when it fractures unity, fuels intolerance, or claims monopoly over truth.
