To etch metal, start by cleaning the metal surface to remove oils and dirt. Apply an etch-resistant coating, such as nail polish or a specialized resist, and scratch your design into it using a sharp tool. Submerge the metal in an acid solution, like ferric chloride for copper or nitric acid for steel, for 10-30 minutes, depending on desired depth. Gently agitate for even etching. Rinse thoroughly with water, neutralize residual acid with baking soda, and remove the resist. Polish the metal for a clean finish. Always wear protective gloves and work in a well-ventilated area.
