-------------
I've come to accept and appreciate this sort of musical "outsider art" vibe that most of my work tends to have. Because music for me tends to be capturing something in a given moment, whether it's what I felt at the time or what I think about a particular topic (what does "graditude", or "a fork in the road", or "November frost crystals" sound like?), without "thinking about it". It's not a premeditated statement, it's not FOR anything, or really even under the assumption that anyone will ever hear it. I just dump my subconscious on the canvas and THEN make post-hoc observations or applications. Song by song it seems pretty disparate and random, but over time and with hindsight, it can serve as a very good means of reflection.
It's a bit like good conversation: if you go in with a point in mind then you'll bend the entire conversation around it and neglect everything else. Wheras there's a level of reciprocal flow and depth that can only happen with open ears willing to hear the truth, rather than what they already want to hear.
I want to know what I actually think and feel, rather than tell myself what it is I am supposed to. And vice versa for conversations with others. Doing otherwise causes way too many problems. But I can only find out by allowing one half to freely speak with no filters, and the other hold space without judgement in equal measure.
And only then is a plan of action assembled, based in truth and love rather than assumptions or projections.
And ultimately creative work for me is just that: another means of growth as a human being. To take the intentional time out to process life lessons like this, and then go out and apply them in the actual praxis of living and engaging with other human beings.
This album spans a life process of 3 years, and I am at a point where I have recognized what those primary themes have been and integrated their lessons. And I now have enough unforced material to express that narrative arc. At least to my ear.
Hopefully you get something out of this. Maybe you think it's cringe.
It is what it is 😌
