This video covers the next stage in the Budget RC Car Project — fitting a steering gyro and testing some temporary rear suspension changes to see if we can finally get the power down properly.
After the Stage 1 upgrades (brushless motor, ESC, and proportional radio conversion), the car was faster… but almost undriveable, especially in wet conditions. Steering was twitchy, traction was unpredictable, and full throttle was basically unusable.
So in this episode:
• Steering gyro installed and configured
• Quick suspension test using packing foam in place of springs
• First proper outdoor drive with the new setup
• Testing gradual throttle application
• Seeing if full power can finally be used
The results are promising — control is noticeably improved, and with smoother throttle input it’s now possible to get full power down in a straight line. Still a long way to go, but definitely progress.
Next steps include new tyres, hex adapters, and further suspension tuning to improve traction and stability.
This project is all about making incremental gains using budget parts, DIY solutions, and whatever’s lying around the workshop.
