As part of my commercial checkride, I had to plan a cross country flight entirely using pilotage and dead reckoning for naviation. Meaning: looking out the window for landmarks, and using airspeed, windspeed and math to predict fuel usage.
I wanted to fly down to RBW to get a preview of what waypoints were down there that I could easily see. So I decided to fly the entire way to RBW via pilotage & dead reckoning. And I had a complete blast doing it.
