We start with Gamera, the Giant Monster and the state of Daiei Studios in the mid-60s, when the company needed a hit and decided to challenge the monster that was already dominating the genre, Godzilla. From there, the series quickly leans into kid-focused storytelling, increasingly wild alien villains, and a tone that defines the Showa era entries for better and worse. I break down what works in those films, what absolutely does not, and why that period still matters to Gamera’s identity.

The retrospective then shifts into the 1990s with Gamera: Guardian of the Universe and the radical creative reset led by director Shusuke Kaneko. This trilogy repositions Gamera as an ancient guardian tied to humanity’s survival, and the tone becomes far more grounded and apocalyptic.
