Biodiesel is a renewable, biodegradable fuel manufactured domestically from vegetable oils, animal fats, or recycled restaurant grease. Biodiesel meets both the biomass-based diesel and overall advanced biofuel requirement of the Renewable Fuel Standard.

How to Make Biodiesel

1. You want to prepare the biodiesel in a room that is at least 60 degrees C because the chemical reaction will not proceed to completion if the temperature is too low.

2. label all your containers as "Toxic—Only Use for Making Biodiesel.

3. Wear Protective Gloves And Other Apparatus

4. Mix the methanol and sodium hydroxide until the sodium hydroxide has completely dissolved then add vegetable oil ( 60 Degree C ) to this mixture.

5. Continue blending this mixture Slowly for 20 to 30 minutes.

6. Pour the mixture into a widemouthed jar. You will see the liquid start to separate out into layers. The bottom layer will be glycerin. The top layer is biodiesel.

7. Allow at least a couple of hours for the mixture to fully separate. You want to keep the top layer as your biodiesel fuel. If you like, you can keep the glycerin for other projects. You can either carefully pour off the biodiesel or use a pump or baster to pull the biodiesel off of the glycerin.

8. You Should Wash Biodiesel at least 5 times with water.

Biodiesel can be used in several ways, but it's important to consider your specific context and vehicle compatibility before trying it.

Compatibility: Most modern diesel engines can handle low blends of biodiesel (B5 or B20) without modification. Check your vehicle owner's manual for specific recommendations. Higher blends (B50, B100) may require modifications and are not always recommended.
