Anguillid eels are fascinating animals – born at sea, they spend most of their lives in rivers, before returning as adults to spawn at sea again. Globally eels are a highly valuable resource, but many species are overexploited and threatened. Here in the Eastern Cape of South Africa two species of anguillid eels live in our rivers, however very little is known about them. We have studied the biology to Eastern Cape eels with the hope of ensuring that they are protected and sustainably managed.
This presentation was produced by Dr Josephine Pegg.
The talk is part of a series of short films called ‘Freshwater 5’ (5-minute presentations) produced by the SAIAB Inland Fisheries and Freshwater Ecology research group.
