Surpur, one of the three taluks in the Yadgir district, is surrounded by rocky hills of north Karnataka. The taluk is more than 500 kilometers away from Bangalore and is considered to be one of the most underdeveloped areas of Karnataka; never the less it cannot be denied that Surpur has its own scenic beauty.
The people in Surpur mainly suffer from water borne diseases as the water is highly contaminated and has huge amounts of lead and iron. The farmers in this taluk are also becoming sick due to constant exposure to pesticides and also due to their ignorance about the consequences of pesticide usage without safety measures. We have an article related to this which reveals that at least 98 farmers have died because of this in 2013.
The Bonal bird sanctuary which is located 15 kilometers from Surpur is a home to many migratory birds. It symbolizes sincerity lays a gigantic lake in a beautiful place called Bonal in Yadgir district where nature and humans are in prefect sync.
The education scenario isn't very pleasant either. The parents don't think it's important to send their children to school. With the highest dropout rate, there are more than 3000 'out of school' children in this taluk. One of the articles focuses on this issue and reveals that poverty being the most common reason for drop out, outdated methods of teaching also contributes to the reason for children not going schools.
We also have an article where children of a private school were affected with asthma and other lung related diseases due to a cotton mill that is situated right next to it.
The main occupation of the people in Surpur is farming and cotton farming is done in abundance. The villagers of Surpur are kind and humble. Devegere, a village inhabited by naive and hospitable farmers, lies at a distance of 6 kms from the Surpur town.
Talking about Surpur, one cannot forget to mention about its inspection bungalow which lies on top of a hill from where almost the entire town can be seen. Taylor Manzil, located at the top a rocky hill, is definitely a point of attraction in Surpur. The sight from the Taylor Manzil or the Inspection Bungalow is indeed picturesque but its indoors tell a different story.
Darbar, the Raja's palace in Surpur gives us a sneak peek of the royal tradition and the history of the Naik dynasty, the kings of Surpur. The palace is being renovated and added with elements from the past of Surpur. It has 4 storeys with a large courtyard. Each storey is beautifully designed and filled with evidences from the past.
