We had an incredible weekend at the West Virginia Herpetological Society Fall Symposium 2025 at New River Gorge National Park.
As part of our work on our upcoming field guide: Amphibians of the Central Appalachians, we documented the Kanawha Black-bellied Salamander (Desmognathus kanawha) — a species found right here in West Virginia. 🦎
The event was full of inspiration, community, and incredible Appalachian biodiversity. We also had the chance to meet up with fellow herpers, including Will Robertson, who joined us in the field for some herping adventures.
This project is all about connecting people to the real-world amphibians of Appalachia through photos, stories, and science that’s made for the trail — not just the lab.
