Anita was raised by a single mother who often moved from one husband to another. She recalls how her mother married different men over time. Because of this unstable life, Anita was unable to finish school and dropped out in class six.
At one point, they moved into a man’s house, and her mother told her to call him “dad.” He worked as a fisherman and usually left the house very early in the morning. One day, however, he stayed home, locked the door, and claimed he was feeling cold. He then forced Anita onto the bed and assaulted her. She tried to resist, but she couldn’t stop him.
When Anita told her mother what had happened, instead of defending her daughter, her mother sided with her husband. Anita felt deeply hurt that her mother did not protect her. The abuse continued—on another day when he didn’t go to work, he took advantage of her again. Each time Anita reported it, her mother did nothing.
Worse still, her mother verbally abused her, accusing her of trying to destroy the marriage. She even called Anita a “husband snatcher” and beat her mercilessly. The assaults went on until Anita became pregnant.
This is Anita’s story—a girl betrayed by the very people she trusted most. Her stepfather violated her, and her mother chose to defend her marriage instead of protecting her own child.
