SDGs Number: 3 (Good Health and Well-being) & 10 (Reduced Inequality)
In this speech, Marcellino Maatita, a third-year medical student at Universitas Gadjah Mada, draws attention to one of Indonesia’s most pressing healthcare challenges: the unequal distribution of doctors. As of May 2024, there are more than 150,000 general practitioners in the country. However, despite this seemingly adequate number, Indonesia still suffers from a critical shortage, particularly in rural and remote areas. The issue is not just about quantity—but about equity. According to the Ministry of Health, around 60 percent of specialist doctors are concentrated on the island of Java, leaving many outer islands underserved.
With reference to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals—specifically Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and Goal 10 (Reduced Inequality)—Marcellino emphasizes how these global objectives remain unmet in many Indonesian regions. In a simple survey he conducted among medical students, financial concerns, lack of infrastructure, and limited access to technology were cited as key reasons for their reluctance to serve in underserved areas.
To address this, Marcellino proposes actionable solutions: providing stronger financial incentives for doctors in remote areas, improving healthcare infrastructure, involving local businesses through CSR programs, and optimizing the national referral system (SISRUTE) to ensure equitable healthcare delivery across regions.
Under the theme “Realize, Recognize, Respond: Our Calling as Future Doctors”, Marcellino introduces the principle of 3R. First, we must Realize that healthcare inequality is not a distant problem—it is our shared responsibility. Second, we must Recognize that our knowledge and skills are not only for the privileged, but for every citizen of this nation. And third, we must Respond—whether by joining rural internships, participating in government initiatives, or advocating for better policies.
In conclusion, Marcellino calls on all future healthcare professionals to act now. While most doctors are still concentrated in Java, millions in Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Nusa Tenggara, and Papua are in dire need of medical care. The future of Indonesia’s healthcare lies in the hands of its young generation.
So, are you ready to Realize, Recognize, and Respond? The time is now.
