After all these years, we finally made an episode of Pati's Mexican Table dedicated to my Jewish-Mexican roots in Mexico City! In this very special to me episode, I head back to my hometown to trace the journey of my paternal grandparents who arrived in Mexico City from Poland in the 1920s to reconnect with my Jewish heritage, which is part of what shaped who I am.
But first, you're coming with me to my first stop whenever I land in Mexico City - my sister Karen Drijanski's wildly popular restaurant, Niddo. Her menu elevates the meals we grew up eating in our home, with many of the recipes coming from our grandmothers. Then historian Mónica Unikel-Fasja takes Karen and me to see the place where our paternal grandparents settled when they first arrived. We also visit a synagogue that was the center of Ashkenazi Jewish life from the 1940s to the 1960s to learn how deeply the stories of Mexico's Jewish community are woven into the fabric of the city.
Back home, my son Sami joins me to make my bobe's recipe for Gefilte Fish a la Veracruzana and our favorite take on challah — filled with irresistible marzipan!
