This is Jack from to fluency.com and welcome to this English lesson where we're going to look at the phrase 'be supposed to' This phrase is very popular in spoken English - native speakers and proficient speakers use this a lot so what we're going to do is go through a lot of examples so that you can better understand how to use it. Here is the first example now..

The Leicester Supremacy - a triumph that was never supposed to happen. The headline said: A triumph that was never supposed to happen. Now, to give you some context Leicester City won the Premier League title. It was never expected - it wasn't intended to happen and that's why we use supposed to because we use this when it wasn't intended to happen and it is stronger than expect. It's saying like it was impossible - a triumph that was never supposed to happen. So, let's have a look at some other examples using supposed to and you're going to see the different ways that you can use it...

You're supposed to be at the meeting. Now, in this case, it's like an obligation that's where you are meant to be, you are supposed to be at the meeting. Here is another example: I'm supposed to finish this by seven. Again, it's an obligation you can also say I meant to finish this by seven. Now, thinking about this in the past, I was supposed to finish this by seven - so it's used in the same way like an obligation but in this case, it's in the past. And finally, you're not supposed to look up the answers - you're not supposed to look up the answers. This can
be used in tests and it's basically saying it's not permitted. Oh, I have one more for you: I thought this was supposed to be hard - it was expected or intended to be hard. I thought this was supposed to be hard. So, you can see the woman in the picture smiling as she exercises - she thought it was going to be hard so she says: I thought this was supposed to be hard.
