South Africa has begun a process to extradite Shepherd and Mary Bushiri from Malawi.
The self-styled prophet and his wife skipped the country, defying strict bail conditions.
They were arrested last month on charges of corruption, fraud and money laundering amounting to more than a 100 million rand.
It is still unclear how the Bushiris managed to leave the country, given that their passports had been handed over to the authorities.
