The Indian monsoon brings with it outbreaks of water-borne diseases. Cases of dengue, typhoid, Hepatitis A and Hepatitis E are on the rise.
Here are ways to identify and tackle these diseases
Typhoid symptoms include high fever, rashes, and gastrointestinal problems. It spreads through water or food contaminated by faecal matter of an infected person. The only effective treatment is antibiotics and hydration.
Hepatitis A is a virus that causes infection and inflammation of the liver. Its symptoms are nausea, fever, joint pain, jaundice and dark-coloured urine. Replenishing nutrition and fluids, along with plenty of rest is recommended.
Hepatitis E also spreads through food or drink contaminated by faecal matter. Its symptoms are so mild in several cases that affected people hardly notice. Its common symptoms are fatigue, fever, vomiting, jaundice, pain in the upper abdomen, dark urine and clay-coloured stool
Avoid things that irritate the liver, eat a balanced diet and drink lots of fluids while recovering
According to Centers for Disease control and Prevention, 804,782 Hepatitis cases and 291 outbreaks were reported just between 2011 and 2013.
It is advisable to visit a doctor rather than self-medicate for these diseases
