But, the story of Reeves’ tragic life and suspicious end were mostly unknown to TV audiences at the time. Studios kept his secret girlfriends and mob connections under wraps to protect his heroic image. But now it’s time to take a look at some startling facts about TV’s Superman. George Reeves was born George Keefer Brewer in Iowa in 1914—five months into his parents’ marriage. His dad left the family shortly after and his mother moved with her infant son to California. There she remarried Frank Bessolo, who took young Reeves in and treated him as his own son. In fact, the boy had no idea that Italian Bessolo wasn’t his real father.
For all Reeves knew, he had a normal, happy family life—but all of that was about to be ripped away.
