Another wave of political tension and uncertainty is brewing in West Africa with a joint announcement by Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger that they are pulling out of the region's most powerful bloc, ECOWAS.
Juntas of the three countries believe the Economic Community of West African States is working against their interests. This is part of long-standing rifts between ECOWAS and the juntas who toppled democratically elected governments of their respective countries.
However, the African Union is calling for dialogue between West African regional bloc ECOWAS and three military-led countries.
ECOWAS said it had not been notified of the countries’ decision to quit the bloc. But the juntas said they did so.
ECOWAS protocol provides that withdrawal takes up to one year to be completed.
The three land-locked countries formed the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) in September 2023 to fight militant groups as well as promote economic prosperity. Analysts say that was a major first sign of ceasing their membership of ECOWAS and pursuing a new bloc.
The exits of the three countries are unprecedented since ECOWAS was established in 1975.
Can ECOWAS survive this tide? What impact will the move have on the withdrawing countries?
