We got the opportunity to work on this 13B Rotary powered Toyota Starlet. We begin tuning the idle then we did some “low boost” pulls to fine tune the fueling before going into high boost.
We took care of the fueling and some more settings on the tune. Then we decided to take it to the track since there was a Import Face Off event in our closest drag strip- Gainesville Raceway.
The team of “La Serenity” have been fighting an issue for the last couple months were the Starlet wasn’t able to do a proper launch. So’ we knew that some clutch adjustments were needed since he got a new combination on the turbo and the engine. We are making more power than before so’ everything had to be adjusted.
On the first test pass we noticed that the car rolled by itself and made no boost down the track, basically it was some clutch adjustments.
We tested that on the 2step before going back to the lanes, that was fixed. But a new issue was discovered- the traction control was too aggressive! So’ when we tried the new clutch adjustment she was able to make a better launch but… the traction control was cutting all the power.
After a intense data analysis of the datalog I was able to identify the issue and took care of it.
At this point I told the owner / driver- well now 2 things will happen, it will go fast or it will spin the tires….
And sure did, it spun. But we were happy that in only 3 tries we were able to identify multiple issues that were affecting the car to make a full pass. Now the clutch have a good adjustment that should let us go down the trac.
What’s next? Try again with less power on the launch!
