Listen to Cate Le Bon here: http://www.catelebon.com/
Being a huge Tim Presley fan, years ago I got turned on to Cate's work, and have enjoyed her previous albums. It just wasn't quite worth it for my to see her the last time she was in LA in 2017, the day before the Tim Presley show at the Highland Park Ebell club. Since then I have patiently waited for Cate to play another show in LA, and finally another one was booked for her new album. I always wonder, her and Tim Presley alike, only really play shows on the tour following a record release. Not many random shows by either of them. I guess they enjoy putting their time into writing (and chairmaking).
I was very glad that the show ended up being at the Getty, I went here once with an old friend a few years ago and enjoyed myself in it's pretty environment, so it was great to come back with a purpose and it was a free show. I met Ian on the 405 on the way up and we both went and hung out and had a great time before Cate played. Then Ian invited me back to his house after which was awesome.
The setting was very pretty, the prettiest time of day, and it faded quickly into night. I have listened to the album many times at work, and i slowly began to like it more and more. 2 of my favorites were Daylight Matters and Home to You, the 2nd and 3rd songs on the album, very nice songs I can listen to over and over. Sad Nudes is another interesting song that was memorable. All of those songs were great to hear live, as I expected. I loved her album Crab Day, and loved the song love is not love. love is not love -- its a coat hanger . Glad that was played as well
What surprised me was "The Light".
This song was good on the record, but live was truly an incredible moment to experience. The horns, yelling, and loud playing over each other in the long ending of the song - i was teary eyed, a really really incredible feeling I felt, a beautiful moment of sense between instruments made by these human beings. That song was so incredible, I will remember that feeling for a very long time. I remember how hard I clapped, in front of my head, as if an activist shouted something into the microphone that I wholeheartedly believed. that is how i felt
